It's almost here - a new year! In 2020, millions of people will start a New Year's resolution, but did you know that only around 8% of people will actually complete their New Year's resolutions? Yeah - crazy right?
Why is that? Why do so many people get motivated for a few short days, then suddenly fall off the deep end? Today, I want to take 2 minutes to talk about why you shouldn't just set New Year's resolutions, but you should do much more to make sure you achieve your life's dreams and desires.
The Problem. New Oxford American Dictionary defines a resolution as a firm decision to do or not to do something. That's it's - it's a decision. A decision is good, but for so many people, that's the only step they take in achieving their desires. They decide, "I'm going to quit smoking in 2020." Or "I'm going to start exercising in 2020." They make the decision, but don't take the necessary steps afterwards to get where they want to go. They think just by making the decision to quit or start doing something they will be able to hit the mark, when in reality, the decision is just the first step.
Yeah, maybe they try exercising for a few days and all the sudden quit. Maybe they try to quit drinking cold-turkey and fail. The reason is because they don't have the plan, the system, and the accountability in place to help them in the process - they only have the decision.
The Fix. So how do you go about creating a successful, life-changing resolution? I believe there's 4 things you must do in order to achieve your New Year's resolutions:
1. Make The Decision. Like, we talked about above, many people make the decision and that's it. In order to achieve what you want in the new year, make the decision and make a promise to yourself that you are going to do whatever it takes to succeed.
2. Make A Plan. After you make the firm decision and promise to do whatever it takes, it's time to create a plan. Let's write out a detailed map that guides you to the finish line. In this plan, you need to be detailed. You need to decide what you'll be doing, when you'll be doing it, how you'll be doing it, and (most importantly) why you'll be doing it.
3. Share The Plan. Once you have your detailed map of what you're going to do, it's time to share it with the universe. Share it with your friends, family, acquaintances - anyone who will support you and keep you accountable. It's going to be hard - you will feel insecure, uncomfortable, nervous, all of the above. But, once you share your vision, it will create an energy and a force that is unreal.
Also, it may be best to find someone who has the same goal as you so you can feed off of each other and keep each other accountable. Find a partner that you can achieve your goals with.
4. Work The Plan. Once you have shared it and people know you're about to do something big, it's time to get to work. It's time to make your dreams a reality. Stick to your plan and review it daily. If you slip up, it's ok. Just because you make one mistake or miss one day does NOT mean you should or can stop. Take some time to look back and see how far you've gone. You must keep going regardless of the setbacks ahead - because there will be many. Keep your accountability partner and your peers up-to-date with your progress as well. This keeps yourself in check with the promise that you made yourself in the beginning of the journey.
Once you complete your journey, celebrate and keep going! Celebrate with your support group and your accountability partner, but don't forget to keep going and keep setting and reaching your new goals.
It's going to be a long journey, but the finish line makes it all worth it. I would love to hear what goals you'll be setting in the new year, feel free to comment below to let me know what you want to achieve! Also, feel free to add me on any of my social media pages. Thanks!
